MARUSAN WINERY – From Ancient to Modern Era

The family started growing grapes at least 300 Years Ago or Earlier – Edo period 江户時代 in the district where same as the recent hometown. During Edo period (1603 – 1868) – they were running an accommodation business in the Katsunuma post station (勝沼宿), an area where part of the five travelling routes connect with Kyoto ( 京都: the old capital) and the new capital Tokyo (東京; called 江户 Edo as its old name) which distance is 529 km.

Neo Generation Winemaker

Having their family history for longer than 300 years, they have been continuing grapegrowing for wine & table grapes until today and nowadays, some other fruits are grown beside grape-picking site for tourists is situated. Their winery for winemaking was established in 1963. The current generation Ryo (若尾 亮 氏) born in 1977, a musician plays various instrumentals and as a DJ in indie music scene, became the head of house in 2008. Meanwhile reserving the ancient’s labels, his creativity deserves extremely high quality in his wines as his hidden masterpieces.

Orange Wine” Produced by Koshu

“Orange Wine” method applied Koshu, whole-bunch grapes with skins brewed without a process of pressing juice. Treated by racking & clarifying at stage of post-fermentation. Antioxidant (SO2) applied at finish of bottling.

Uplifts matured fruits, tropical fruits, yellow peach, cinnamon, brown
spices with elegant sweetness to nose. Showing brilliant deep gold colour, characterized by thicky – juicy fruit flavours with comfort of astringency to palate; in addition to distinguishing “Koshu” characters like fresh & citrussy textures, the flavour compliments with complexity created by techniques of maceration – fermentation with grape skins .
